Peach Boy

Long, long ago, there lived an old man and his old wife in a village. He went to the mountain to gather woods. She went to the river to wash clothes, when a big peach came floating down the river.
"What a big peach this is! I'll take it home." she said and came home with it on her back.
peach When she began to cut it, to their surprise, the peach cut apart of itself and a big baby came out of it.
"Oh, my God!" They were very surprised but very happy to be blessed with him.
"What shall we call him?" she asked.
"He was born from the peach. How about calling him Momo-Taro,'Peach Boy'." he said.
"That's a good name."
Momo-Taro grew and grew quickly to be a strong and kind-hearted boy.

One day he said to his parents.
"I hear there live a few bad ogres in the Ogre's Island."
"Oh, yes. They sometimes come to our village and do many bad evil things. But we are at a loss what to do."
Peach 2 "Then I'll go there and defeat them. My mother, please make me some millet dumplings."
She made him the most delicious dumplings in Japan. He carried them in a bag around his waist and left his house for the Ogre's Island.

On his way, he met a dog.
"Mr.Momo-Taro, what do you have in your bag?"
"I have the most delicious dumplings in Japan."
"If you give me one, I'll follow you." He gave one dumpling and the dog became his follower with pleasure.

When he and the dog made their way, a monkey came toward him.
"Mr.Momo-Taro,what do you have in your bag?"
"I have the most delicious dumplings in Japan."
"If you give me one, I'll follow you." He gave one dumpling and the monkey became one of his men with pleasure. When they were walking, a pheasant flew over toward them.
"Mr.Momo-Taro,what do you have in your bag?"
"I have the most delicious dumplings in Japan."
"If you give me one, I'll follow you." He also gave one dumpling and the pheasant became one of his men with pleasure. Peach 4 "That must be the Ogre's Island." the dog said.
"We can see the castle." the monkey said.
"I'll fly and see what it is like." the pheasant said and flew away to the island.

They reached the island at last. In front of the castle's gate, there was a big ogre standing. Momo-Taro picked up a big stone and threw it at him. The monkey climbed up the gate quickly to open it. The pheasant attacked the ogre's eyes. "We can't do anything." the ogre said and they ran away. Peach 5 "Help!" they said in the castle and they ran away. The huge boss came out. "Hey,little boy. I'll kill you." the ogre said, swinging his iron bar. "Are you the boss?" said Momo-Taro,jumping on the bar quickly and lightly. He attacked the enemy so quickly that the enemy couldn't catch him. Peach 6 "Bad ogre, you did evil things to the villagers. I'll never forgive you. Get my punch!" "I'm sorry. Forgive me, forgive me. I give up, I give up."

"Are you sure? Do you promise?" "We are sure. We promise. I'll never tell a lie. I'll give you our treasures."

Momo-Taro got many treasures in the castle. Gold, silver, textile and so on. He and the dog pulled the cart full of many treasures while the monkey and the pheasant pushed it. It was a very wonderful day for them.

桃太郎

むかしむかし、あるところに、おじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。 おじいさんは山へしばかりに、おばあさんは川へせんたくに行きました。 おばあさんが川でせんたくをしていると、ドンブラコ、ドンブラコと、大きな桃が流れてきました。 「おや、これは良いおみやげになるわ」 おばあさんは大きな桃をひろいあげて、家に持ち帰りました。 そして、おじいさんとおばあさんが桃を食べようと桃を切ってみると、なんと中から元気の良い男の赤ちゃんが飛び出してきました。

「これはきっと、神さまがくださったにちがいない」 子どものいなかったおじいさんとおばあさんは、大喜びです。 桃から生まれた男の子を、おじいさんとおばあさんは桃太郎と名付けました。 桃太郎はスクスク育って、やがて強い男の子になりました。

そしてある日、桃太郎が言いました。 「ぼく、鬼ヶ島(おにがしま)へ行って、わるい鬼を退治します」 おばあさんにきび団子を作ってもらうと、鬼ヶ島へ出かけました。

　

旅の途中で、イヌに出会いました。 「桃太郎さん、どこへ行くのですか？」
「鬼ヶ島へ、鬼退治に行くんだ」
「それでは、お腰に付けたきび団子を１つ下さいな。おともしますよ」
イヌはきび団子をもらい、桃太郎のおともになりました。

　

そして、こんどはサルに出会いました。
「桃太郎さん、どこへ行くのですか？」
「鬼ヶ島へ、鬼退治に行くんだ」
「それでは、お腰に付けたきび団子を１つ下さいな。おともしますよ」
そしてこんどは、キジに出会いました。
「桃太郎さん、どこへ行くのですか？」
「鬼ヶ島へ、鬼退治に行くんだ」
「それでは、お腰に付けたきび団子を１つ下さいな。おともしますよ」
こうして、イヌ、サル、キジの仲間を手に入れた桃太郎は、ついに鬼ヶ島へやってきました。

鬼ヶ島では、鬼たちが近くの村からぬすんだ宝物やごちそうをならべて、酒盛りの真っ最中です。
「みんな、ぬかるなよ。それ、かかれ！」
イヌは鬼のおしりにかみつき、サルは鬼のせなかをひっかき、キジはくちばしで鬼の目をつつきました。
そして桃太郎も、刀をふり回して大あばれです。

とうとう鬼の親分が、
「まいったぁ、まいったぁ。こうさんだ、助けてくれぇ」
と、手をついてあやまりました。

桃太郎とイヌとサルとキジは、鬼から取り上げた宝物をくるまにつんで、元気よく家に帰りました。
おじいさんとおばあさんは、桃太郎の無事な姿を見て大喜びです。 そして三人は、宝物のおかげでしあわせにくらしましたとさ。

Click-Clack Mountain

Long, long ago there lived a kind old man and his old wife in a village. A crafty raccoon lived in the mountain and annoyed them with much mischief. The old man could bear no more and decided to catch him. The old man succeeded in catching the raccoon, but he was so clever that he cheated the old woman and let her untie the rope. "Dear Mom,I'll never trouble you any more. I promise to help you from now. So please let me free." But as soon as he was set free, he hurt her severely. "How foolish you are!" The old woman died from the pain. rabbit A rabbit,which lived in front of the house, knew this and decided to revenge the raccoon for the old woman's death, because the old woman had been kind to her. She asked him to gather firewood and let him carry it on his back. "Dear Raccoon, I am a rabbit of the front mountain. I love you so much. Please help me gather fire-wood and carry it to my house." On her way home she set fire to him without being noticed. 'Click-Clack!'went the fire! He got burnt on his back so severely.

Next day, she cheated him and applied red pepper to the burn on his back instead of ointment. "Dear Raccoon,I am a rabbit of the middle mountain. I love you so much. I'll cure you of your burn." "Auchee...!"

raccoon The next day, she cheated him very well and invited him to go fishing and let him make a boat made of mud. "Dear Raccoon, I am a rabbit of the rear mountain. I love you so much. Don't you want to eat fish? I'm small, so I'll make a boat of wood. You are big, so you must make a boat of mud." The crafty raccoon in the mud-boat sank in the river."Help me..." カチカチ山

むかしむかし、おじいさんの家の裏山に、一匹のタヌキが住んでいました。 　タヌキは悪いタヌキで、おじいさんが畑で働いていますと、 「やーい、ヨボヨボじじい。ヨボヨボじじい」 　と、悪口を言って、夜になるとおじいさんの畑からイモを盗んでいくのです。 　おじいさんはタヌキのいたずらにがまん出来なくなり、畑にワナをしかけてタヌキを捕まえました。 　そしてタヌキを家の天井につるすと、 「ばあさんや、こいつは性悪ダヌキだから、決してなわをほどいてはいけないよ」 と、言って、 そのまま畑仕事に出かけたのです。 　おじいさんがいなくなると、タヌキは人の良いおばあさんに言いました。 「おばあさん、わたしは反省しています。 　もう悪い事はしません。 　つぐないに、おばあさんの肩をもんであげましょう」 「そんな事を言って、逃げるつもりなんだろう？」 「いえいえ。では、タヌキ秘伝(ひでん)のまんじゅうを作ってあげましょう」 「秘伝のまんじゅう？」 「はい。 　とってもおいしいですし、一口食べれば十年は長生き出来るのです。 　きっと、おじいさんが喜びますよ。 　もちろん作りおわったら、また天井につるしてもかまいません」 「そうかい。おじいさんが長生き出来るのかい」 　おばあさんはタヌキに言われるまま、しばっていたなわをほどいてしまいました。 　そのとたん、タヌキはおばあさんにおそいかかって、そばにあった棒(ぼう)でおばあさんを殴り殺したのです。 「ははーん、バカなババアめ。タヌキを信じるなんて」 　タヌキはそう言って、裏山に逃げて行きました。

　

しばらくして帰ってきたおじいさんは、倒れているおばあさんを見てビックリ。 「ばあさん！　ばあさん！　・・・ああっ、なんて事だ」 　 おじいさんがオイオイと泣いていますと、心やさしいウサギがやって来ました。 「おじいさん、どうしたのです？」 「タヌキが、タヌキのやつが、ばあさんをこんなにして、逃げてしまったんだ」 「ああ、あの悪いタヌキですね。おじいさん、わたしがおばあさんのかたきをとってあげます」 　ウサギはタヌキをやっつける方法を考えると、タヌキをしばかりに誘いました。 「タヌキくん。山へしばかりに行かないかい？」 「それはいいな。よし、行こう」 　さて、そのしばかりの帰り道、ウサギは火打ち石で『カチカチ』と、タヌキの背負っているしばに火を付けました。 「おや？　ウサギさん、今の『カチカチ』と言う音はなんだい？」 「ああ、この山はカチカチ山さ。だからカチカチというのさ」 「ふーん」 　しばらくすると、タヌキの背負っているしばが、『ボウボウ』と燃え始めました。 「おや？　ウサギさん、この『ボウボウ』と言う音はなんだい？」 「ああ、この山はボウボウ山さ、だからボウボウというのさ」 「ふーん」 　そのうちに、タヌキの背負ったしばは大きく燃え出しました。 「なんだか、あついな。・・・あつい、あつい、助けてくれー！」 　タヌキは背中に、大やけどをおいました。

　

次の日、ウサギはとうがらしをねって作った塗り薬を持って、タヌキの所へ行きました。 「タヌキくん、やけどの薬を持ってきたよ」 「薬とはありがたい。 　まったく、カチカチ山はひどい山だな。 　さあウサギさん、背中が痛くてたまらないんだ。 　はやくぬっておくれ」 「いいよ。背中を出してくれ」 　ウサギはタヌキの背中のやけどに、とうがらしの塗り薬をぬりました。 「うわーっ！　痛い、痛い！　この薬はとっても痛いよー！」 「がまんしなよ。よく効く薬は、痛いもんだ」 　そう言ってウサギは、もっとぬりつけました。 「うぎゃーーーーっ！」 　タヌキは痛さのあまり、気絶してしまいました。

　

さて、数日するとタヌキの背中が治ったので、ウサギはタヌキを釣りに誘いました。 「タヌキくん。舟をつくったから、海へ釣りに行こう」 「それはいいな。よし、行こう」 　海に行きますと、二せきの舟がありました。 「タヌキくん、きみは茶色いから、こっちの舟だよ」 　そう言ってウサギは、木でつくった舟に乗りました。 　そしてタヌキは、泥でつくった茶色い舟に乗りました。 　二せきの船は、どんどんと沖へ行きました。 「タヌキくん、どうだい？　その舟の乗り心地は？」 「うん、いいよ。ウサギさん、舟をつくってくれてありがとう。・・・あれ、なんだか水がしみこんできたぞ」 　泥で出来た舟が、だんだん水に溶けてきたのです。

「うわーっ、助けてくれ！　船が溶けていくよー！」 　大あわてのタヌキに、ウサギが言いました。 「ざまあみろ、おばあさんを殺したバツだ」 　やがてタヌキの泥舟は全部溶けてしまい、タヌキはそのまま海の底に沈んでしまいました。
